Glazing is a technique used in acrylic and oil painting to create depth and dimension. Here are a few steps.
1. Use your acrylic paints and paint your underpainting monochromatically, focusing mostly on value. If you want to create a warmer undertone, use browns, and use blues to create a cooler undertone. You can also use shades of gray.
2. For areas that are mostly dark, start with a darker value and progessively get lighter with application, working down to the details, highlights and texture. THis is opposite for lighter areas.
3. Create glaze by mixing liberal amount of water with color.
4. Glaze is transculescent, so layer several layers. With each layer, the color's intensity increases. To mute colors, use a glaze of white.
5. Wait for each layer of glaze to dry before adding another. If it's not dried, some pigment may be removed.
